RE: Fredrick MD to Myrtle Beach

I’m planning a trip from Frederick MD to Myrtle Beach SC for Thanksgiving and want to avoid 95. Does anyone have any familiarity with taking US-15 to US-29 to Greensboro NC then US-220 to US-501 to Myrtle Beach, SC? I’m familiar with the route until VA/NC state line. I'm just concerned about congestion around Greensboro.
I live at Lynchburg Va and follow the US 29 route to the beach all the time. It is a good 4 lane, 60-65 mph highway all the way to Greensboro. Both Lynchburg and Danville are bypassed so, other than a few traffic lights south of Lynchburg, it is smooth sailing. Greensboro will be a little congested as you near it but once you are on US-220, it clears up. 220 is completely 4 lane all the way to its end in Rockingham. There I follow US 1 for about 1 mile, get on 74 East to NC rte 38 and follow it through Bennettsville SC. It joins 501 just north of Marion. The only two lane stretch on the whole route is the 16 miles or so from US 74 to Bennettsville.
Traffic is usually very light on most of this whole route, which makes it a very pleasant route to follow. Only short stretch at Greensboro where several major highways converge is it busy. Just stay in the right lane until you reach the interchange for Asheboro and you will be fine.

RE: Wireless Internet at Myrtle Beach Travel Park campground

It depends on how long you sign up for. We were there in October. I think it was $24.95 for 7 days, which is high but we wanted it. Most years we had a decent signal but this year we were further away from one of the antennas and had more difficulty signing on. The antennas are located on 3 of the bath houses on the beach area.

RE: Johnson City TN to Martinsville VA

Fairystone State Park is the closest to Martinsville and should be open during your time period.

RE: Myrtle Beach Travel Park Campground

There is a back way into the outlets but following Kings Road will be the easiest for you. If you do want to try the back way, turn left out of the campground onto Kings Road and then take the first right and follow it. You will come into the back side of the outlets. It is longer but would be less traffic.

Construction info - Tri-State Tollway

Hello Illinois/Indiana friends. I am heading into the Chicago area tomorrow. In May the Tri-state tollway was a mess for the most part. Has it improved at all. I have to go as far north as the Des Plaines exit (Dempster street).
Also, what is the status of the I-65/I-80/94 interchange construction. I do know a way around it but just curious. In May it was closed completely.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

RE: These people are driving me crazy!!

The best thing we did was to get caller ID and an answering machine. When an number we do not recognize comes up or "UNKNOWN CALLER" is in the display, we just don't bother to answer. Our phone holds 45 called numbers at a time. One time I counted 38 that were solicitors, some of which were listed several times.
Of course you can have some fun with them. When they ask if so and so is home, tell them they will be released from prison in 10 years if lucky and to call back then.

RE: Myrtle Beach WiFi CG

We are at MBTP right now and the signal strength has been very good but their service is so-so and not cheap. Last night, even though I had a very good signal strength, I could not connect to their sign on page. It was down. Other times my signal strength shows very good but the transfer rate is a lightning 1 mbps, and varies between 1 mbps and 11 mbps.
I think the connections are ok, just the ISP they use is lousy.

RE: Holiday Travel Park Myrtle Beach

Dogs generally are not allowed on the beach between hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm between Memorial Day and Labor day. Not sure how much it is enforced anyway. Plus, there is a long stretch of undeveloped beach just north of the campground that makes a great place to walk your dog. Very few people along that stretch except walkers. It is about 1.5 miles long.

RE: Holiday Travel Park Myrtle Beach

We have been going to Myrtle Beach Travel Park for many years. We like the location on the north side of MB. The park is smaller than the Big Three in south MB, but is still quite large.
We always ask for a site as close to the beach as possible since that is why we go. The vast majority of sites are on the beach area and all are pull through. They are set up to take advantage of the prevailing sea breeze so, while there is no shade there, most of the time the breeze keeps us cool. There is grass in the areas around most parts of each beach area site other than the general area that rigs are parked.
There are a number of sites along the lake that many people prefer since they are more grassy and less sand. Third, there are the sites in the woods which are a bit far from the beach but well shaded.
MBTP has been in the process of building all new bath houses, which are very nice. Most on the beach area have been replaced while the ones in the woods have not been.
We like the fact that they do not rent golf cars to campers. The only ones permitted are for the full time residents that make up a small percentage of MBTP's population.
The campground is convenient to everything we want to do in MB. There is a Kroger on one end and a Walmart on the other end of Kings Road so picking up supplies is very easy. It is also close to the restaurants we usually visit while there.
We will be going there this Sunday for a week. The crowds will be gone and we look forward to a pleasant October week there this year.

Central NC Gas Availability

We are leaving central Virginia on Sunday for Myrtle Beach. I typically stop in the Asheboro area to fill up when I get to about a half tank although I can make it as far as I-95/SC 38 interchange without much worry. How are you folks in the US-220 corridor between Greensboro and Rockingham doing on gas or on as far as Bennettsville, SC doing on gas supplies? Thanks in advance for any information or advice.

We did the Yogi Bear too. It's your anniversary - go motel.
While I would normally want to camp, since it is your anniversary, make it special and stay at the Natural Bridge Hotel. Here is the website:

RE: Best Starting Point on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Enjoy your trip. I'm not sure how long you plan to stay on the parkway but be aware that the campgrounds directly on it will start shutting down toward the end of October. Dates vary but I think all of them will be closed by 10/31.

RE: Best Starting Point on the Blue Ridge Parkway

To clarify any confusion, the Skyline Drive starts in Front Royal Va and travels the length of Shenandoah National Park for 105 miles. Please be aware that there is a $15 fee collected at the entrance station to travel the Skyline Drive. The receipt is good for 7 days. There are several campgrounds in Shenandoah spaced along the route. Also, the maximum speed limit on the Drive is 35 mph.
The Blue Ridge Parkway starts at the end of the Skyline Drive at Afton, VA. It is 469 miles in length and ends at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. There is no fee to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway and there are numerous places to get on and off as necessary. There are a number of campgrounds spaced along the length of the parkway. The maximum speed limit on the BRP is 45 mph.
Enjoy your trip no matter where you start.

It was when we were in that area in late May. Just stay on US 30 through Merrillville and pick up IL route 394 north just a few miles over the state line. It takes you right to 80.

RE: Best restaurants in Williamsburg Va???

But we didn't really like the overpriced Captain George's Seafood restaurant.
Agreed, you can drop 100 easy for 3 people. Ridiculous.
When Captain George's was reasonable, it was good. It may still be good, but for the prices they charge now, its not that good. The last time my wife and I ate there some 5 years ago it cost about $60. I have no idea what it is now and don't plan to find out.

It has changed course since my last post. Now you might want to reconsider going to the OBX. The map above changes as the NHC issues its updates.
